LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham – Review

Arguably, nothing can be more adventurous than saving the Earth from a villain who plans to shrink it. If you thought this wasn’t captivating enough then you will be glad to know that LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham [$4.99] supplements the heroic title with humor, fun, and action unlike we have seen before. If you are no stranger to the LEGO games, then you would know that the LEGO Group targeted most of the high profile games such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and many more. The LEGO games all seem to have a similar foundation and seeing the same formula behind each game means that the ingredients have yet to be changed. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing – if its not broken, why fix it?

This is the 3rd installment of the LEGO Batman series and the game slowly departs from focusing too much on Batman to concentrate on other important matters, such as stopping Braniac from destroying the planet. Since the game is looking beyond Gotham’s dark streets, you will get to use over 150 characters, heroes & villains, from the DC Universe to help you on your mission. The adventure game is comprised of 15 levels which will take you to phenomenal locations such as the Lantern worlds of Zamaron and Odym, the Hall of Justice, the Batcave, the Justice League Watchtower, and even to outer space. The game is extremely rich with content and this should give your eyes a lot of customization and variety to comprehend.

The game starts with Brainiac ambushing six of the seven Lantern Corps and brainwashing them to serve him. Shortly, when Batman notices that Brainiac’s fleet is approaching Earth through his telescope; he gets mind-controlled as well. We won’t spoil the rest of the story for you but it gets interesting from there on. The plot is very engaging as it presents all our childhood heroes that we still love – not going to lie, even at our old age we adore them. The funny thing about the story is that it turns out that Brainiac’s motives for wanting to shrink the Earth is to add it to his marble collection. Very ambitious indeed!

You get to play with different types of heroes and villains throughout the campaign and each character employs a special ability which can be utilized. Still, the game grants you even more diversity by allowing you to unlock special suits for each character which adds even more special abilities. For example, Batman can change into a Space Suit which allows him to bounce about and employ laser beams while the Sonar Suit makes him invisible to enemy eyes. Let’s not even get to the Demolition Suit! We will retain some of the game’s mystery for you to discover.

Additionally, as you progress within the game the environments become bigger and more exploratory. Due to the fact that you will be in control of 2 characters at the same time, the camera angle does come in the way of a proper experience. But what seemed to cover up for this inconvenience was the lovely personalities that each character had. You will find heroes & villains joking around and arguing amongst each other which definitely made us smile but even more so laugh. If a game does that to you, then this is a game worth playing. Not to forget that the game features first-class voice acting and memorable theme songs that will delight you.

Finally, there is no doubt that this is a superb game which will give you lots of content to interact with, plenty of smiles & laughter, and will stimulate the nostalgic amongst you. For its overabundance of hero characters, delightful & comedic conversations, elegantly presented story, and its console-like experience; LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is a LEGO force to be reckoned with. One can easily overlook the minor bugs in this premium title due to the great amount of fun that it brings to the table. If you want to re-visit a childhood memory or re-experience a once moment of happiness, then this is a game that we would recommend. You can check the trailer for this game below.

We rate it 9.6/10
